A couple of weeks ago, the Dinosaur Encounters exhibition opened at Rheged and we were asked to pop along with the boys to see what we thought – so here we go!
I asked my 6 year old to summarise what he thought about the Dinosaur Encounters experience and this is what he typed… “The Dinosaur Encounters exhibition was great. I liked the big dinosaur!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
The majority of the experience is located on the top floor of the Rheged centre which is accessible by stairs and a lift. There is, however, a 4-metre-tall Tyrannosaurus Rex on the ground floor that moves and roars! O was a little nervous of it at first, but soon came round and enjoyed watching the dinosaurs movements. Q didn’t seem phased by it at all!
We had arrived a little early for the Dinosaur Encounters exhibition so took a stroll around the Rheged centre to see what else was there. There’s an outdoor play area (which is included within the price of tickets), indoor soft play area, Lego walls, a variety of shops and a couple of cafe areas. The boys especially loved the toy shop, which had some fantastic dinosaur displays to link in to the Dinosaur Encounters experience currently on show.
We made it up to the Dinosaur Encounters experience right on time and O was given a quiz sheet to fill in on his way around the exhibition. All the questions relate to the information available and made it even more fun for him. Q is a bit young for things like this, but still enjoyed being pushed around the display in his pushchair.
There are a variety of dinosaur models that are ‘animatronic’ – which means they move realistically, with sound effects that make it feel just that little bit more ‘real’! There’s also an area to do brass rubbings, build dinosaurs with Lego bricks and a real 3D printer, recreating ancient fossils.
The Rheged centre is located just off Junction 40 of the M6 on the outskirts of Penrith. The Dinosaur Encounters experience is on display until 3rd September 2017 at Rheged – you can find out more information here.
Disclosure: We were provided with tickets to the Dinosaur Encounters exhibition for the purpose of this review, however all words and opinions are our own.
