On 9th March 2018, my little Q turned 2 years old. After I’d picked O up from school, we rushed to the Hallmark shop to pick up some balloons to add to his set-up of gifts in the living room. We made it back in the nick of time and Q was so excited to open his birthday presents from the family. We purposely waited until the afternoon – after work, school and nursery – so that he wasn’t disappointed to be leaving all his new things half an hour after opening them!
We celebrated with some close friends and family the following day at home, hosting a dairy-free tea party. The children played Pass the Parcel (scoffing at the number of layers I’d wrapped the prize in) and Musical Statues, then played in the playroom together and danced to the typical children’s party songs.
I had arranged for all of the party food to be dairy-free, so that Q could have anything he wanted and wasn’t left out in any way. We had ham and egg filled sandwiches, Hula Hoops, Pringles, cocktail sausages, mini scotch eggs and Party Rings, to name a few, and many of the grown-up guests commented that they were surprised at how ‘normal’ a buffet it was. That really made my day – I didn’t want it to seem like a table full of ‘special’ food.
We were very kindly sent a First Years Party Pack by Personalised Parties, which included personalised plates, party hats, cups, treat boxes and more. I was incredibly impressed with the printing of the design and quality of the products; the hats are still being worn and played with by the children now, 5 weeks later. The website allows for personalised messages to be added, and I opted for a rhyming “Q is Two!”. Many of our guests commented on how lovely the plates, etc, were, which was so nice to hear.
We ended the party with a free-from birthday cake from Sainsbury’s, and the collection of the balloons and treat boxes I’d prepared for each of the children. They were quite good sizes and could probably be used as a prepared meal box also. Q and the rest of the children all seemed to really enjoy the little party at our house, and I’m so glad that we managed to keep it safe for him, whilst not letting him miss out on any of the typical party items. I can’t believe my little munchkin is now two years old… How time flies!
